Nightlight

Nightlight a parody
The Harvard Lampoon
2009

About three things I was absolutely certain.
First, Edwart was most likely my soul mate, maybe.
Second, there was a vampire part of him--which I assumed
was wildly out of his control-- that wanted me dead.
And third, I unconditionally, irrevocably, impenetrably, heterogeneously, gynecologically, and disreputably
wished he had kissed me.

And thus Belle Goose falls in love with the mysterious and sparkly Edwart Mullen in the Harvard Lampoon's hilarious send-up.

Pale and klutzy, Belle arrives in Switchblade, Oregon, looking for adventure, or at least an undead classmate. She soon discovers Edwart, a super-hot computer nerd with zero interest in girls. After witnessing a number of strange events--Edwart leaves his Tater Tots untouched at lunch! Edwart saves her from a flying snowball!--Belle has a dramatic revelation: Edwart is a vampire. But how can she convince Edwart to bite her and transform her into his eternal bride, especially when he seems to find girls so repulsive?

-Hayz's Review-
Wow. I thought this book was going to be a funny book that changed things from Twilight. But wow, no it was so stupid! It was a waste of my time. Not only did most of it not make sense and you had to read parts of it again, it was just ugh, lame. I give this book 1 star because I didn't like it. I highly suggest you don't read it! Or if you do, get it from the library or borrow it, you will waste your money if you buy it.

Muchacho

Muchacho
Louanne Johnson
2009

They should teach us the
stuff we really need to
learn--like how to make
somebody really love you,
and how to turn off that
little voice in your head
that tells you what a loser
you are, and how to
teach your dog to pee
where it's supposed to and
how to get over being
sad when your little
cousin dies, and how to talk
to your father
without both
of you getting
so mad.

Eddie Corazon is angry. He's also very smart. But he's working pretty hard at being a juvenile delinquent. He blows off school, even though he's a secret reader. He hangs with his cousins, who will always back him up--when they aren't in jail.
Then along comes Lupe, who makes Eddie's blood race. She sees things in Eddie he doesn't even see in himself. A hear, and a mind, and something more: a poet.
But in Eddie's world, it's a thin line between tragedy and glory. And what goes down is entirely in Eddie's hands.

-Hayz's Review-
I give this book 3 stars, because I liked it. I think everyone should read this book because in some places I could relate to what Eddie was saying. If there was one thing that I didn't like it was that in the book it said "Lupe said... Lupe said... Lupe said..." that got really boring to read. But other than that it was really good, just a cute book overall. I hope everyone reads this book, the best part was pages 82-85, it is so true.

The Vampire Is Just Not That Into You

The Vampire Is Just Not That Into You
Vlad Mezrich
2009

Are you in love with a vampire? Are you worried that you might not be his (blood) type? Do you wonder whether that cold stare means he isn’t interested . . . or if it’s because he’s been dead for three centuries (nothing personal)? Have you tried to coax him out of his crypt with a flash of your neck or a near-death situation that requires him to save you at the very last possible moment? Have you ever considered what it will be like to introduce him to your mother?

Even though your vampire’s skin is transfixingly translucent, he can still be very hard to read. Sometimes he’s simply holding back his true feelings, resisting the urge to bite you in the chance that one day you will truly love him. And other times . . . well, he’s just not that into you.

How can you tell? Undead dating specialist Vlad Mezrich has all the answers, utilizing quizzes, Top Ten lists, language analysis, real-life (and real-death) testimonials, and fancy charts to show you what you need to do in order to get your vampire and keep him forever. Once you go vamp, you never decamp – so let this eternally rewarding book show you the way to the vampire of your dreams.

-Hayz's Review-
I give this book 3 stars because I liked it. I thought it was funny, it made me laugh a lot at some of the stupid things we do for vampires. Lol. Um not much else to say, this book was more so of a guide then an actual book.

Interview: David Moody

Okay People!!! Here it is, the highly anticipated author interview!!!

*Special thanks to the incredible David Moody, for taking his time and effort!!!*

David Moody was born in 1970 and grew up in Birmingham on a diet of trashy horror and pulp science fiction books and movies. He worked as a bank manager and as operations manager for a number of financial institutions before giving up the day job to write about the end of the world for a living. He has written a number of horror novels, including AUTUMN, which has been downloaded more than half a million times since publication in 2001 and has spawned a series of sequels and a movie starring Dexter Fletcher and David Carradine. Film rights to HATER have been bought by Guillermo del Toro (Hellboy, Pan's Labyrinth) and Mark Johnson (producer of the Chronicles of Narnia films). Moody lives outside Birmingham (UK) with his wife and a houseful of daughters and stepdaughters, which may explain his pre-occupation with Armageddon.

DAVID MOODY self published Hater online in 2006, and without an agent, succeeded in selling film rights to Guillermo del Toro (director, Hellboy 1 & 2, Pan's Labyrinth and the upcoming Hobbit series) and Mark Johnson (producer, The Chronicles of Narnia). With the official publication of Hater, David is poised to make a significant mark as a writer of "farther out" fiction of all varieties.

1. What was your inspiration for the Autumn series?

Like a lot of people, I sometimes find myself thinking what I’d do if everyone else on the planet suddenly disappeared. That’s where the initial inspiration for Autumn came from – I imagined myself alone in the world and that everyone else was gone (like leaves falling off the trees – that’s where the title originally came from). But that idea on its own didn’t make for a very exciting story! I’ve always been a fan of horror movies, and zombies have always been my personal favourite monster. I took the opportunity to combine my empty world story with the living dead, and the Autumn series was the result.

2. Are you currently working on a book? If so, could you give a sentence on what it's about?

My books were originally self-published, but they were acquired by a large US publisher in 2008 (which is why they’re so hard to get at the moment). I’ve spent much of the last two years working with an editor to get the books ready for republication, and the first Autumn book will be released in September 2010. I’ve just finished the first sequel to Hater (Dog Blood – due out in June 2010) and I’m about to start writing the final book in the series.

3. How do you get past writer's block?

Personally, I don’t think writer’s block exists. I think it’s a state of mind you work yourself into, but there’s no single known cause and no known cure. I have a very simple rule when I’m writing – if it’s not working and the words aren’t flowing, then I stop! There’s no point beating yourself up and staring at a blank screen or a blank piece of paper. I think you have to be prepared for inspiration to strike at any moment, and when it does you should make a note of what you’re thinking or send yourself an email... something like that. Then, when you sit down to write again, you should be ready to go! I know it’s not always that simple, but that’s what I do!

4. How did you get into writing?

I’ve always enjoyed writing and I’ve been doing it for as long as I can remember. When I left school I wanted to make films but I didn’t have any training or any cash and I ended up working in a bank! I had all these great ideas for movies, and no way of showing them to anyone so instead of writing screenplays, I started writing novels.

5. Do you have a favorite author? Did they inspire you to write?

My favourite authors are some of the classic British authors of science-fiction: H G Wells, John Wyndham (who wrote ‘The Day of the Triffids’ amongst others) and Nigel Kneale (who created ‘Quatermass’). Each of these authors produced books which really helped shape my formative years. ‘Triffids’ in particular, completely terrified me as a child and I remember reading it thinking ‘I want to tell stories like this!’

6. If you hadn't become an author, what would you have liked to have become?

As I mentioned earlier, I always wanted (and I still do want) to make films. But if I had to have a job outside of publishing and entertainment, I’d have liked to have been a forester or something like that – working outside in the open, not in some dingy little office!

7. What do you enjoy to do in your free time (besides writing)?

I have a big family and I work at home so I often end up doing the washing and cooking etc. My writing is really busy at the moment so free time is very limited. When I do get chance, my passions are: running (anything up to half-marathon distance), watching movies (mostly horror and science-fiction of course!) and live music. I spend more than I can afford on concert tickets!

8. If you have any advice to young and hopeful writers, what would it be?

Firstly, never give up. If you have a story to tell, keep telling it until someone listens. I’ve been doing this seriously for 15 years now and although I’ve enjoyed some level of success for much of that time, it’s only the last couple of years since it’s really started paying off. Secondly, plan your work (I like to have the full story of a book mapped out in my head before I start writing), try to make yourself write at least a page a day, and keep going until you reach the end of the story – you can go back and edit etc. once you’re done. Finally, although it’s often hard to take, you should receive criticism willingly and listen to it. There’s no such thing as negative feedback – all feedback, whether good or bad, is useful and can help you grow as a writer.

9. What do you enjoy most about writing?

There are so many things... the freedom to create whole new worlds, lives and scenarios and to have total control over them... the fact that part of the job is feeding your brain and getting inspiration – be that watching movies, reading books or just thinking (it’s the only job I’ve ever had that I’ve been able to do lying in the bath!). I think the best part about writing though, is having an impact on other people. That might sound like a cliché but it’s true. For me, there’s no bigger buzz than when someone really enjoys your book and wants to tell you about it!

10. Is there a reason many of you novels can be categorized with the "apocalypse"?

I know what you mean – I guess I think about the end of the world too much! The reason is because I’m interested in people and how they react and interact with each other. Presenting my characters with a global catastrophe is a great way of looking at human nature without the barriers and restrictions which surround us in our daily lives. It brings out people’s true characters and emotions, and perhaps makes people realise what’s really important in their lives. I think we go through our lives and take many things for granted – everything could change tomorrow!

11. Do you have a personal preference to any of your books?

I can honestly say I don’t have a favourite – they all mean a lot to me, usually for different reasons. If your asking which is my favourite story, I’d have to call it a tie between Autumn: Purification (the third book in the Autumn series) and Dog Blood (the first Hater sequel). The great thing about writing a series is that once the first book is done, much of the set-up and characterization is complete so you can concentrate more on the story. And, strange as it might sound, you get to know your characters better and you start connecting with them.

I think we all owe David Moody a big round of applause!!!

Crazy Beautiful

Crazy Beautiful
Lauren Baratz-Logsted
2009

Entering the bus now is perfection. And it's not just the clothes and accessories, which makes her look as though she just walked out of the pages of the coolest back-to-school catalogue in the world. It's not that in a world that most always looks like black and white to me, she's like this shocking blaze of color. It's not any of that. I's that with that cloud of long black curls, she's like some sort of dark angel. And it's that when my eyes meet hers, eyes that are the color of a serene ocean, she gives me a quick smile, a nervous smile.
Immediately, I recognize that she's new too, that she's nervous too.
And I recognize something else: I know her. I don't mean that we've met before, because we haven't. I don't even know her name! somehow, instantly, I know her.

I would give a lot to see that smile
again, directed at me.
It may not be much, but I would give
everything I've got.

In an explosion of his own making, Lucius blew his arms off. Now he has hooks. He chose hooks because he wouldn't outgrow them so quickly. He chose hooks so that everyone would know he was different, so he would scare even himself.
Then he meets Aurora. The hooks don't scare her. They don't keep her away. In fact, they don't make any difference at all to her.
But to Lucius, they mean everything. They remind him of the beast he is inside. Perhaps Aurora is his Beauty, destined to set his soul free from its suffering.
Or maybe she's just a girl who needs love just like he does.

-Hayz's Review-
I didn't like this book because it was so short and by the time something actually started to happen the book was over. I liked the idea of the book being a retold story of Beauty and the Beast, but I don't know. I give this one star because I didn't like it.

Living Dead Girl

Living Dead Girl
Elizabeth Scott
2008

Once upon a time, I was a little girl
who disappeared.

Once upon a time, my name was
not Alice.

Once upon a time, I didn't know
how lucky I was.

When Alice was ten Ray took her away from her family, her friends-- her life. She learned to give up all power, to endure all pain. She waited for the nightmare to be over.

Now Alice is fifteen and Ray still has her, but he speaks more and more of her death. He does not know it is what she longs for. She does not know he has something more terrifying than death in mind for her.

This is Alice's story. It is one you have never heard, and one you will never forget.

-Hayz's Review-
Wow. I have so many feelings about this book. I read the whole thing last night, and well, truth be told it was a disturbing story. Where it says "It is one you have never heard, and one you will never forget." Wow that is so true. It is a terribly sad story, and the man, Ray, oh my gosh, what a pervert. When I was reading this book I couldn't help but think of kidnapping cases like Elizabeth Smart, or Jaycee Lee Dugard, I mean I feel so bad for them, they probably went through something like this. I liked this book but I didn't. I would never reread this. But I would suggest it, just because, oh I don;t know. I just think people should read this book.

When it turns out that her new friend lives in the house they've targeted for thier next job and the cute guy is a cop, Dani must question where her loyalties lie: with the life she's always known - or the one she's always wanted.

-Hayz's Review-
I give this book 4 stars, because I really liked it but the ending was sad. I'm a little confused though, is Dani and Greg together? Or not? I love Greg, he was/is perfect for Dani, and she clearly likes him. I liked how loyal Dani was to her mom even though it meant not being able to be with Greg, a guy she really liked, because she was so loyal. Any way 4 stars, its a really good book!

It takes the arrival of Evan Kirkland for Lauren to figure out the answer: She's been holding back. She's been denying herself a bunch of things because staying with her loyal and gorgeous boyfriend, Dave, is the "right" thing to do. After all, who would give up the perfect guy?

Oh my gosh, I just finished this last night. And I loved it! 5 stars all the way! I liked this book because it was hard for Lauren to make a choice between Mr. Perfect and Mr. He Makes Me Happy. GET THIS, I'm supposed to be starting a journal about "my journey." Please. I can see it now: Dear Diary, As I'm set adrift on this crazy sea called "life" . . .
I don't think so.

It's been seventy-five days. Amy's sick of her parents suddenly taking an interest in her. And she's really sick of people asking her about Julia. Julia's gone now, and she doesn't want to talk about it. They wouldn't get it, anyway. They wouldn't understand what it feels like to have your best friend ripped away from you.
They wouldn't understand what if feels like to know it's your fault.
Amy's shrink thinks it would help to start a diary. Instead Amy starts writing letters to Julia.
But as she writes letter after letter, she begins to realize that the past wasn't as perfects as she thought it was--and the present deserves a chance too.

-Hayz's Review-
I finished! Lol. Anyway. I give this book 2 stars because I didn't really care for it but I really liked Patrick, although the no talking thing was a bit childish. I so understand the whole its my fault, blaming herself for what happened to Julia. But oh my gosh her mother, Julia's not Amy's, she is a bitch! Now I know "try imaging losing your daughter, and having her friend survive." But still, I'm glad she moved away. And Caro, well we've all been in her position. And ya, I'd give anything to not be in it again. So overall it was okay.

Kate Brown's life has gone downhill fast. Her father has quit his job to sell vitamins at the mall, and Kate is forced to work with him. Her best friend has become popular, and now she acts like Kate is invisible.
And then there's Will. Gorgeous, unattainable Will. whom Kate acts like she can't stand even though she can't stop thinking about him. When Will starts acting interested, Kate hates herself for wanting him when she's sure she's just his latest conquest.
Kate figures that the only way things will ever stop hurting so much is if she keeps to herself and stops caring about anyone or anything. What she doesn't realize is that while life may not always be perfect, good things can happen-but only if she lets them. . . .

-Hayz's Review-
I liked this book, although I wasn't to fond of the ending. But its supposed to be about real life. And well real life can suck. I'm so happy that she and Will are together. And Anna omg, what a bitch! I mean sure we've all had our friends dump us for more popular friends. But for her to come crawling back to Kate just to leave her again, come on. That is so heartless.
But I really did like this book. It was a nice read, just like her other book Something, Maybe. So if you liked this then you should read that one. Because I still liked the other one better.

Nothing Like You

Nothing Like You
Lauren Strasnick
2009

So here's where things started to get a little mixed up.
I suddenly had a secret. And it made me feel guilty, yeah, but I also felt really fantastic. I felt the opposite of dead, really what I've been striving for, and someone suddenly wanted me in a way I hadn't been wanted before. I didn't even mind having to keep things to myself. I mean, I thought the whole situation was really unfortunate, but I know that I was the one he wanted more. That if she weren't so fragile, so unstable, he'd be with me for real. No Saskia. No secret affair.

"You think he's yours but he's not," I thought.
"You think he's yours but really he's mine."

When Holly loses her virginity to Paul, a guy she barely knows, she assumes their encounter is a one-night stand. After all, Paul is to popular to even be speaking to Holly . . . and he happens to have a long-term girlfriend, Saskia. But ever since Holly's mom died six months ago, Holly has been numb to the world, and she's getting desperate to feel something, anything-so when Paul keeps pursuing her, Holly relents. Paul's kisses are a welcome diversion . . . and it's nice to feel like the kind of girl a guy like Paul would choose.
But things aren't so simple with Saskia around. Paul's real girlfriend is willowy and perfect . . and nothing like Holly. To make matters worse, she and Holly are becoming friends. Suddenly the consequences of Holly's choices are all too real, and Holly stands to lose more that she ever realized she had.

-Hayz's Review-
This book is given two stars because it was okay. I thought the ending was plain, ya know nothing exciting happened, it just ended. And how everyone hated Holly but not Paul for what they did, it was low! But hey, isn't that how life is. I liked this book because no matter the situation people are going to react in almost the same way. Holly whore, but what about Paul, he did have sex with her, and he still wasn't hated, not like she was. I also liked it because it showed me about relationships, it made me think of my relationships with people I know.
